The 2010 Ducru-Beaucaillou, which is deep maroon in colour, bursts from the glass with robust, expressive blackcurrant cordial, baked plums, and mulberries smells, as well as wafts of menthol, Marmite toast, black olives, and dried lavender. Full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house, with sturdy walls of incredibly firm, super ripe tannins and assertive freshness supporting the muscular black fruits before ending with remarkable length.

With tons of minerality, a fantastic opaque purple color, and somewhat more structure and tannin than either Poyferre or St.-Pierre (and that's saying something), this is a blockbuster, wonderful Ducru Beaucaillou that should be at its peak in a decade or so and last for 40-50 years. The proprietor is not alone in believing this is the best Ducru Beaucaillou since 1961. The vineyard's typical wet rock, creme de cassis, mild oak, and gravelly stoniness shine through in this superb, full-bodied, stunningly pure, and powerful effort. This is wine for the ages, to be forgotten for at least a decade.
