DoubleWood 12 was launched in 1993, using a process designed by Malt Master David Stewart in 1982, now commonly known as ‘wood finishing’. Sweet fruit and Oloroso sherry notes, layered with honey and vanilla on the nose. With smooth and mellow with beautifully combined flavours ~ nutty sweetness, cinnamon spiciness and a delicately proportioned layer of sherry. With long and warming finish.

Matured in two separate wood types, the Balvenie Double Wood single malt whisky has a unique taste. Every phase contributes distinct characteristics to the final single malt whisky. The last few months in tuns allow the whiskies to mix harmoniously, the sherry wood adds depth and fullness of taste, while the conventional casks soften and provide delicate character.

In the 1980s, David Stewart MBE, the Malt Master blender of William Grant & Son, created a revolutionary whiskey known as Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old. The whiskey is first aged in American Oak ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads, which gives it a delicate taste and softens it. The mixture is next given depth and richness of flavor by Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks, and finally they blend harmoniously in big oak barrels known as “tuns.”
