Description

Château Gazin was purportedly erected over the ruins of the Hôpital de Pomeyrols, which was founded by the Knights of Malta in the 12th century. It has been owned by the Bailliencourts dit Courcol, one of France’s oldest families, since the beginning of the twentieth century.

Gazin is a strong, vibrant 2011, with a dark ruby/purple colour, a huge, meaty, earthy richness, loads of coffee, black cherry liqueur, and spice flavours, and a full-bodied mouthfeel. It will benefit from a another 3-4 years of cellaring and should last for 15 plus years.

Gazin is situated in the eastern region of the Pomerol plateau, where the soils are rich in clay and limestone. Gazin’s 26-hectare vineyard (big by Pomerol standards) borders the vineyards of L’Evangile and Pétrus. The wine is composed of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are vinified traditionally, and the wine is aged in oak barriques (50% new) for 15-18 months.
