Wine is synonymous with joy and sharing, but it can also be a very serious matter to experts who are particular about it. To them, a misstep can lead to a compromise in the quality of your drink and can become a big lapse in style.
Whether you are indeed an expert or simply passionate about wine, some attention is needed if you want to fully appreciate the many nuances of wine. Be aware that sometimes it takes very little to ruin everything!
This is why it is extremely important to handle it carefully.
Here is our quick list of the 3 wine mistakes you should absolutely avoid:
1. Putting ice to chill it
Serving temperature is a fundamental parameter for wine and if you need to chill it, as you may in case of a white, sparkling or rosé wine, put it in the fridge, use a glacette or get yourself a refrigerated bottle rack or chill-pod.
If you are serious about wine, don’t ever use ice cubes, not even in the middle of a steamy summer afternoon.
Why? Because you’ll be watering it down. And by doing that you will irreparably compromise its organoleptic qualities and change the sensations on your palate.
2. Drink wine in plastic
Plastic cups are considered a real blasphemy by oenophiles. Not only are they not elegant and definitely not eco-friendly, the worst thing, for a wine lover, is that they inhibit the aromatic bouquet and do not allow you to fully enjoy the colour and reflections that are an important part of the tasting experience.
Wine should always be served in glass goblets. You’ll be spoilt for choice nowadays, depending on the wine you’re drinking, the material, and your budget, of course.
Choosing the right glass isn’t just a quirk for wine geeks: it actually guarantees a complete sensory process.
3. Store it incorrectly
No matter how long you wish to keep your bottles, storing wine correctly is essential to avoid any deterioration.
Keeping your wines in sunlight is never a correct choice. Sunlight is able to alter the taste of wine. White wines and sparkling wines, in particular, can be affected by the rays of light, especially if stored in white or poorly coloured glass bottles.
Never keep bottles next to heat sources or machinery that create vibrations and in environments with strong and persistent smells. Hence, the kitchen is certainly not the right place. And be careful also not to leave your wine buys in the car too long, for the same reasons.
The ideal storing place for wine would be a cellar with consistent temperature (between 14 and 18 degrees) and humidity. But, since not all houses have a cellar, look for fresh and poorly lit corners of the house such as stairs or dressing rooms.
But don’t worry if you’ve done any of these things sometimes. Not a big deal! This is a judgment-free area, and they are very common wine mistakes. From today you will know what to avoid if you want to enjoy your wine to the fullest!
