The colour of this wine is a deep yet vibrant purple. Strong black fruit aromas, especially those of the Bigarreau cherry, emerge on the nose, highlighting the qualities of exceptionally ripe grapes while maintaining good freshness. A smidgen of spice and menthol enhances the entire dish. On the palate, the attack is extraordinarily thick, precise, and complex; the mid-palate and finish are incredibly aromatic and balanced; and the finish is accompanied by a sparkling freshness. The tannins, which blend force and elegance in perfect harmony, serve as the foundation for the whole. Once more, we see the excellent terroir’s expression in this wonderful vintage.
This winery and Château Grand-Puy-Ducasse share a portion of their names. The term Grand Puy refers to a small, gravelly hill that was once entirely owned by the same landowner. In 1750, the owners of this hill sold some of its vines to Pierre Ducasse. The property where the remaining vines are located, currently known as Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, has gone by a number of titles that have changed as the daughters of the property’s owners have wed. After a marriage to a monsieur de Saint-Guiron, it was known as Saint-Guiron in the middle of the 19th century. One generation later, when a daughter married a man named François Lacoste, it got its current name.
