A deep, gripping, structured rendition with a black currant, stewed plum, and dark fig fruit core at its center and a powerful charcoal spine. On the finish, which is complemented by a lot of concealed acidity, loam and bittersweet cocoa aromas appear. Should spread out nicely, although it will take this 2011 Pomerol a little longer to round out than most others. Best between 2017 and 2027.
The southeast Pomerol plateau has a large stretch of surface gravel due to a geological enigma. This unique soil is shared by L’Évangile and three other vineyards. The location of the property is really advantageous. It has a boundary with Château Pétrus to the north and is only divided from Cheval Blanc in Saint-Emilion to the south by a little road.
The 22 acre vineyard is situated on a subsoil with residual iron and is made up of sandy clay soil with clean gravel. Merlot (80%), which adds to the wine’s rich flavor and body as well as its distinctive suppleness, and Cabernet Franc (20%), known locally as “Bouchet,” which adds delicacy and structure. Traditional methods are employed. The harvests, as well as several other duties that must be completed in the vineyard throughout the year, are done by hand and production is constrained. Olivier Trégoat, Technical Director of Château Rieussec, Château L’Evangile, Château Paradis Casseuil, and Long Dai, oversees the vineyard.
