The colour is deep garnet-purple, with aromas of baked blackberries, plum preserves, mulberries, and kirsch, as well as traces of cedar box, iron ore, and tapenade, and a whiff of smoked pork. The palate is medium-bodied and packed with earthy/savoury characteristics, underpinned by finely grained tannins and plenty of freshness, with a lingering, earthy finish.
For ages, the ancient ‘Camp Fortet’ (little fort) with its low profile has watched over the medieval town of Saint-Émilion, peacefully monitoring it in times of prosperity and guarding it in times of war. The 20-hectare vineyard is located on a single plot on the highest slopes of Western Saint-Émilion. The chateau and its surrounding wall (thus ‘clos’) are tiny and unpretentious, built from the same rock on which it stands. Clos Fourtet has been a member of Saint-Émilion’s exclusive ‘Premiers Grands Crus ClassĂ©s’ since its inception in 1956.
