On the nose, there’s toffee, pineapple, passion fruit, and apricot jam. A tinge of orange, rye spice, nutmeg, cloves, apricot jam, pineapple, wood shavings, and passion fruit round out the flavour. The wood is really well managed. Finishes with rye spice, smooth bourbon, passion fruit, pineapple, and jam.
Built in 1972, the distillery was owned by Seagrams, which provided the distillery with cash to build the distillery in a very modern style. Using water that has been filtered via volcanic rock provides soft, clean, and transparent water. Another novel way to producing whisky is to use melted snow as a source of water. The distillery is fairly industrial in appearance, with enormous buildings and a modern approach to whisky production.
In 2018, it was introduced in Japan as a premium label substitute for the enormously successful Fuji Sanroku Tarujukugenshu 50°. Kirin’s Jota Tanaka, the 2017 Icons of Whisky Master Distiller/Master Blender of the Year, handpicks each cask used in this blend.
